Officer Positions
Seneschal
The Seneschal is the administrator and coordinator of a branch of the SCA. They are responsible for the effective functioning of the branch as a whole, and in its conduct with other SCA branches, as well as in the mundane world. This role generally includes liaising between various local officers, other branches, public contacts (such as peace officers or media inquiries), and Principality or Kingdom officers.
Herald
The Herald is not only responsible for “being loud” at events (known as Voice Heraldry), but they are responsible for assisting new members with selecting an appropriate in-period name (Name Heralds), assisting in the development of an appropriate device or coat of arms (Armory Herald), providing combatant announcements during tourneys (Field Herald), and researching all of the above in the context of our current middle ages (Book Herald). The Herald is also responsible for maintaining protocols, precedence, and traditions for the local branch.
The Marshallate
The Marshallate of the SCA are responsible for safety in the various marshal activities provided by the SCA. Not every branch has every activity, however; some of the marshal activities include Armored (or Heavies) Combat, Rapier, Cut & Thrust, Archery (target & combat), Thrown Weapons, Unarmored Fighting, Equestrian, and Siege Weaponry. The Marshallate are available to authorize fighters for competition, ensure safety on tourney fields or at practices, and ensure the safety of fighters and bystanders alike.
Chamberlain
The Chamberlain is responsible for all of the local branch’s “stuff.” From the coronets and thrones (for a Barony) to the regalia given out to the Champions, the Chamberlain needs to know who has what and when it will be returned. If an item is lost, the Chamberlain is the one to research costs for replacements.
Web Minister
The Web Minister is responsible for maintaining the branch web site and ensuring compliance with all SCA guidelines and policies pertaining to web use within the local branch. The Web Minister is responsible, therefore, for designing, building, maintaining, and updating the branch website, online calendar, e-mail accounts, and any contact forms that may be in use.
Exchequer
The Exchequer is responsible for all financial situations within the local branch. There are State and Federal laws with which local Exchequers must be familiar and they need to make quarterly financial reports to the Principality Exchequer.
Arts & Sciences
The Minister of Arts & Sciences is responsible for fostering the studying and teaching of period culture, arts, and technology. Local Arts & Sciences Ministers may schedule regular “Work Nights” to work on projects, create largesse for an upcoming (or current) reign, and coordinate displays at local events.
Chatelaine
The Chatelaine is responsible for recruiting and welcoming newcomers to the SCA, as well as coordinating public demonstrations. The Chatelaine may hold Newcomer Classes to help those who desire it become more familiar with how we play in the SCA. Local Chatelaines can assist newcomers with everything from the pageantry of Court to explanations during business meetings to networking them with people who can further assist a newcomer in the direction they wish to go.
Deputy Chatelaine – Gold Key
Another duty that falls to the Chatelaine is that of ensuring newcomers have appropriate garb for events. The SCA does not have a strict policy on garb–rather, there needs to be an attempt at pre-17th Century attire. Gold Key can help! Gold Key is a collection of garb that represents various styles and cultures and is available for loan at most events.
Chronicler
The Chronicler is responsible for documenting the history and activities of their local branch. If the local branch has a newsletter, the Chronicler is the person who curates and publishes that newsletter, including meeting minutes and any announcements required by the local branch. They are also responsible for their local calendar and ensuring it is up to date and accurate, publishing the information in a timely fashion.
Social Media Officer
The Social Media Officer is responsible for administering the local branch’s social media presence. They moderate and coordinate SCA policies across any and all official platforms on which the local branch has a presence. The Social Media Officer coordinates with the Principality or Kingdom Social Media Officers to bring attention to Principality, Kingdom, and/or Knowne World Events, as well as deliver relevant content, and coordinate live streaming for events.
